Why Do I Need an Eye Exam?

Eye exams are key to monitoring vision and eye health, allowing us to detect and treat eye problems early on.

Many eye diseases don’t show early symptoms, so your vision can be impacted before you notice. Routine eye exams let us examine the small details for potential signs and symptoms to help you avoid significant damage later on.

When Do I Need an Eye Exam?

How often you need an eye exam depends on your vision needs. Generally, the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO) recommends adults (aged 20-64) should have an eye exam at least every 2 years.

Seniors (65+) and patients with health conditions, like diabetes, should have annual eye exams, as they are at a higher risk of developing eye diseases. At Island Eye Care, we recommend visiting us annually so we can get to know you and your eyes on a personal level. The more frequently you visit your optometrist, the more likely we can detect any warning signs of disease.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

Testing your eyesight is just one part of the eye exam process.

Your optometrist will discuss your health history, current needs, and lifestyle to understand how we can help. We’ll evaluate your eyesight, with and without glasses, to see if you need a prescription (or upgrade) and to determine an accurate lens power.

Next, we’ll examine how well your eyes work together, looking at coordination, depth perception, and eye movements. We’ll also measure macular pigment optical density, which helps us assess your risk for age-related macular degeneration.

Finally, we’ll assess the health of your eyes, examining aspects like pupil responses with specialized tools. Your optometrist might dilate your pupils to view the retina and optic nerve more closely.
